The SWBGU was formerly the Local Enterprise Partnership for Swindon and Wiltshire, established by Central Government in July 2011 as a private sector-led partnership between local businesses, Swindon Borough Council, Wiltshire Council, the military and the education
sector.
The functions of the Swindon and Wiltshire Enterprise Partnership (SWLEP) have been transferred to the local authorities in Swindon and Wiltshire as part of new government policy, effective from 1 April 2024.
This change signifies a substantial reorganisation aimed at enhancing local governance and economic development. The newly formed Swindon and Wiltshire Business and Growth Unit, delivered by Wiltshire Council, will now lead economic strategy and manage key government programmes such as the Growth Hub and Careers Hub. This transition ensures continuity and a focused approach to regional development initiatives.
The creation of the Economic Advisory Board within this unit marks a significant step in empowering local businesses. This board will provide a structured platform for businesses to influence decisions impacting the region’s economic future, ensuring their voices are integral to policy-making and strategic planning.
The ongoing collaboration between Wiltshire Council and Swindon Borough Council will be crucial in delivering comprehensive support and development projects. Their combined efforts will continue to drive growth, improve infrastructure, and support businesses, ensuring that the Swindon and Wiltshire area remains a vibrant and economically robust region. This collaborative approach will leverage the strengths and resources of both councils, fostering a cohesive and dynamic economic environment.
Furthermore, the local authorities will continue to build on the achievements of the SWLEP, such as the successful Growth Deals and investment in digital infrastructure, education, and transport improvements. These initiatives have laid a strong foundation for future growth and will be integral to the strategies and plans implemented by the Business and Growth Unit. The focus will remain on key sectors including advanced engineering, digital innovation, and sustainable energy, aligning with the region’s vision to be a leader in innovation and quality of life.
By 2026, we want Swindon and Wiltshire to be renowned for innovation, entrepreneurialism and great quality of life.
